Headache Relief With Physical Therapy

Are you living with chronic, daily headache pain? You are not alone. Headache is one of the most common pain conditions reported, with up to 75% of adults reported having a headache within the last year. There are many different types of headaches, with numerous causes. Headaches can be characterized into two different categories: primary and secondary headaches.

Primary headaches are those that aren’t due to another medical condition. These can include:

• Cervicogenic (muscle-spasm headache or headache originating from the cervical spine)

• Migraine or cluster headaches

• Tension headaches

Secondary headaches are related to another medical condition, such as:

• Fever

• High blood pressure

• Head Injury or trauma

• Sinus disorder

There are effective treatments for most types of headaches and physical therapists can help treat many type of headache symptoms. The challenge lies in determining the type of headache and its cause. The role of the physical therapist is to help determine the type of headache by identifying a mechanical trigger of the headache symptoms. From there, physical therapists can develop a treatment plan to help reduce pain and improve quality of life.

Physical therapists can utilize their expertise with hands-on care, patient education, and prescribed movement to help restore mobility in the joints, correct muscular imbalances, and help with strategies to manage headache symptoms. If you’re struggling with headaches and feel you could benefit from being evaluated by one of our physical therapists, please call us to schedule an appointment!
