Summer Safety

Summer is here and boy is it HOT! We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place with so many options for outdoor fun and sun. Whatever you choose to occupy your summer free time, it is important to stay safe so that you can enjoy the fun activities without pain. Here are some “summer safety tips” that may help to keep you safe while enjoying your favorite summer activities.

o Always check all equipment before beginning your activities to make sure everything is in good working order. We often put our bikes, hiking gear, etc. up for the winter and often when getting them out again they need a little tune up. Be sure to check all equipment before using it, to ensure they are safe to use.

o Use proper safety equipment for the activity or sporting event you are taking part in. Don’t forget your helmet when biking and your protective safety equipment when playing team sports (mouth guards, pads, etc.)

o Be sure to pack proper clothing. Often when hiking you may need to dress in layers for climate changes that may occur along your hike as the elevation changes.

o Be sure to pack extra water. With the heat of summer there is a great degree of dehydration that can occur if you are not careful. Often, if you wait until you are thirsty your body is already dehydrated. Continuing to sip water as you enjoy your activity will ensure you stay hydrated.

o Be sure to apply sunscreen and bug repellent when necessary. Even on cloudy days you can get a pretty nasty burn, so be sure to apply the necessary sun screen and/or bug repellent and reapply as needed.

o Work back into summer activities with ease. Often are bodies are somewhat deconditioned from these activities, so being sure to warm-up, stretch, and ease back into them will assist in keeping you injury free this summer.

Hopefully these tips will help to keep you safe for your fun in the sun. If you have already sustained a summer injury, give us a call today so we can get you back to your favorite activities as soon as possible. Happy summer!
